Start with the entry doors
Most forced entries go through a door, not a window. A deadbolt with a decent throw into a reinforced strike, fixed with long screws into the stud rather than the jamb trim, is the single highest-value upgrade on most homes.
Then the sliding and rear doors
Rear and side doors get less attention and more cover from fences and planting. Sliding doors benefit from a secondary lock and an anti-lift measure so the panel cannot be jumped off its track.
Windows: latches, not just locks
Keyed window locks are useful, but consider egress. Every bedroom needs a way out in a fire. Where windows are keyed, keep the key on a hook nearby and make sure everyone in the house knows where it is.
Key control beats extra hardware
If you don't know how many copies of your key exist, extra deadbolts don't help much. After a move, a tradesperson handover, or a tenancy change, rekeying restores the thing security depends on: knowing exactly who can get in.
What we won't tell you
