Changing a lock in a rental
In Victoria, a renter generally cannot change locks on a rented property without the rental provider's consent, and a rental provider generally cannot change them without the renter's consent. There are specific exceptions, including some family violence circumstances.
Keys after a lock change
When a lock is changed, the other party is normally entitled to a copy of the new key. We supply the extra set as standard on rental jobs so nobody is left waiting.
Who pays for a lockout
If you've lost your keys, the cost is generally yours. If a lock has failed through fair wear and tear, it is usually the rental provider's repair responsibility. Keep the invoice either way - you'll need it if you're seeking reimbursement.
